 2011 NORTH INDIAN OCEAN CYCLONE SEASON


1. DEEP DEPRESSION BOB 01

DURATION: Feb 2- Feb 3

PEAK INTENSITY: 45km/h, 1002hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: SW BOB, near Srilanka coasts.

LANDFALL: Srilanka.



2. DEPRESSION ARB 01 [TROPICAL STORM]

DURATION: Jun 11- Jun 12

PEAK INTENSITY: 45km/h, 996hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: Near Mumbai coasts.

LANDFALL: Saurashtra, Gujarat.


3. DEEP DEPRESSION BOB 02 [MONSOON]

DURATION: Jun 16- Jun 23

PEAK INTENSITY: 65km/h

FORMATION: Extreme North BOB

LANDFALL: Sagar Islands, West Bengal

It gave good rains in Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh states.


4. LAND DEPRESSION 01 [MONSOON]

DURATION: Jul 22- Jul 23

PEAK INTENSITY: 35km/h, 990hpa[mbar]

DIRECTION: NW

As it moved deep inland, it gave heavy rains all over the way in Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh, Gujarat.


5. DEPRESSION BOB 03 [MONSOON]

DURATION: Sep 22- Sep 23

PEAK INTENSITY: 45km/h, 995hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: Near Chittagong, Bangladesh coasts.

LANDFALL: North Odisha, Jharkhand.


6. DEEP DEPRESSION BOB 04 [TROPICAL STORM]

DURATION: Oct 19- Oct 20

PEAK INTENSITY: 55km/h, 1000hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: Central BOB

LANDFALL: Myanmar, Bangladesh.


7. CYCLONIC STORM KEILA [TROPICAL STORM]

DURATION: Oct 29- Nov 4

PEAK INTENSITY: 65km/h, 996hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: Middle- East coasts.

It did not made any significant landfall.


8. DEEP DEPRESSION ARB 03 [TROPICAL STORM]

DURATION: Nov 6- Nov 10

PEAK INTENSITY: 55km/h, 1000hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: Middle East coasts.

LANDFALL: Gulf of Aden.


9. DEEP DEPRESSION ARB 04 [TROPICAL STORM]

DURATION: Nov 26- Dec 1

PEAK INTENSITY: 55km/h, 998hpa[mbar]

Formation:  Comorin Sea, Indian Ocean.

It did not made any significant landfall.


10. VERY SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM THANE [CAT-2]

DURATION: Dec 25- Dec 31

PEAK INTENSITY: 160km/h, 969hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: Port Blair

DIRECTION: W-NW

LANDFALL: Cuddalore- Puducherry, Tamilnadu


Chennai recorded 65km/h to 75km/h. Cuddalore and Puducherry which were the landfall spots recorded 160km/h.
Thane made landfall in Dec 31 between 6am to 7.30 am.

And thats the end for the 2011 cyclone season.

CYCLONE MAARUTHAA:[TROPICAL STORM] On April 13, an area of low pressure formed in the South Bay of Bengal, under the influence of a persistent area of convection, in a span of six hours.  Under favorable conditions, rapid deepening took place, and the system was classified as a depression on April 15. The system moved very fast under the influence of mid-latitude trough in westerlies lying over India in the middle and upper tropospheric levels. [5]  However, strong vertical wind shear and unfavourable MJO inhibited rapid intensification or further intensification of the system.
