2013 NORTH INDIAN OCEAN CYCLONE SEASON was an active cyclone season with 5 cyclonic storms, 5 depressions and many more.


1. CYCLONIC STORM VIYARU [TROPICAL STORM]


DURATION: May 10- May 17

It was at its peak intensity of 85km/h winds, 990hpa[mbar] pressure.

FORMATION: Southern BOB

It started to move in W-NW direction, however due to subtropical ridge it turned ENE direction.

LANDFALL: Chittagong, Bangladesh.



2. DEPRESSION BOB 02 [MONSOON]


DURATION: May 29- May 31

It was at its peak intensity of 45km/h sustained winds, 990hpa[mbar] pressure.

FORMATION: North BOB

DIRECTION: North

LANDFALL: West Bengal.

It affected parts of Bihar and Jharkhand with heavy rains.

3. DEPRESSION BOB 03 [MONSOON]


DURATION: Jul 30- Aug 1

It was at its peak intensity of 45km/h sustained winds, 990hpa[mbar] pressure.

FORMATION: North BOB

DIRECTION: West.

It made landfall in Balasore, Odisha - Ditgha, West Bengal.

It also affected Madhya Pradesh with heavy rains leaded to local flooding.

4. LAND DEPRESSION 01 [MONSOON]


DURATION: Aug 20- Aug 23

It was at its peak intensity of 45km winds, 990hpa[mbar] pressure

LANDFALL: West Bengal, N Odisha, Jharkhand

RAINFALL RECORDED

Kolkata, West Bengal- 206mm [72 hrs]

Pachmarli, MP- 500mm [72 hrs]



5. EXTREMELY SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM PHAILIN [CAT-5]


DURATION: Oct 6 [entered basin] - Oct 14

It was at its peak intensity of 215km/h{3 min} winds, 940hpa[mbar] pressure.

FORMATION: Gulf of Thailand

DIRECTION: NNW

It made landfall near Gopalpur, Odisha.


6. DEEP DEPRESSION ARB 01 [TROPICAL STORM]


DURATION: Nov 8- Nov 11

It was at its peak intensity of 55km/h winds, 1002hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: SW ARB

DIRECTION: W-NW

It made landfall in Somalia.


7. DEPRESSION BOB 05 [TROPICAL STORM]


DURATION: Nov 8 [entered basin] - Nov 17

It was at its peak intensity of 45km/h sustained winds, 1003hpa[mbar]

Remnants of Tropical Depression 30W [Wilma] entered into Malay Peninsula emerged into BOB

DIRECTION: WSW, Later WNW

It made landfall in Nagapattinam, Tamilnadu coasts.

Heavy rains with gusty winds upto 60km/h winds reported in Nagapattinam.

Mayiladhuthurai- 220mm



8. SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM HELEN[ CAT-1]


DURATION: Nov 19- Nov 23

The peak intensity was 100km/h winds, 990hpa[mbar] pressure.

FORMATION: Central BOB

DIRECTION: W-NW

Landfall: South of Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh.



9.VERY SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM LEHAR [CAT-1]


DURATION: Nov 23[ entered basin] - Nov 28

It was at its peak intensity of about 140km/h sustained winds, 980hpa[mbar] pressure.

FORMATION: South China Sea

DIRECTION: WNW

LANDFALL: Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

RAINFALL RECORDED

Mayabander- 243mm [24 hrs]

Port Blair- 213mm [24 hrs]



10. VERY SEVERE CYCLONIC STORM MADI [CAT-2]




DURATION: Dec 6- Dec 13

It was at its peak intensity of 120km/h sustained winds, 986hpa[mbar]

FORMATION: South India, SW BOB

DIRECTION: NE, NNW, N, SW

First, moved in Ne direction, however changed the direction due to convection to NNW, and later turned North, this made the cyclone to weaken and again moved in SW, and crossed between Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam - Tondi, Tamilnadu coasts as a depression.
